A few years ago I decided to make the switch to all natural products. It was not an easy journey. Not only does your body have to adjust but the products are more expensive. Switching was very important after our mom was diagnosed with breast cancer so I stuck it out. Now, I can’t imagine going back because it has really made a difference in my health. Similar to other products, it’s a little difficult to find inexpensive, all natural candles. I stumbled across a recipe in Lisa’s book – Simple Farmhouse Life. I used her recipe as a reference but altered it slightly just to simplify it a bit. They turned out great!
These candles are very easy to make, taking only a few ingredients: Beeswax pellets, coconut oil, a few small mason jars, and cotton wicks. I will link below the products I found and used. I just ordered it all from Amazon.
Materials Needed:
- 1 cup of beeswax pellets
- 1 cup of coconut oil
- A few cotton wicks
- A few half-pint mason jars
- A few straws, skewers, or chopsticks
Step 1 – Melt everything down
Take a medium sized pot and measure out a cup of coconut oil and a cup of beeswax pellets. I used a 1-1 recipe and they were a nice, creamy but hard consistency. Turn your stovetop on medium / low and monitor as it melts down into liquid form.
Step 2 – Get your jars ready
While the wax mixture is melting down you will want to prepare your jars. Take a sheet of parchment paper and place your jars on top. Then take the cotton wicks and a little piece of tape and position them on the bottom of the jars. Then place a few straws, skewers or chopsticks on the top of the jars to center the wicks.

Step 3 – Fill your jars
Whenever the oil and beeswax melts and combines take your pot off the heat and fill your jars to the desired heights. Try to not bump the stick/straw. Once the mixture has solidified, it is impossible to reposition the wicks. Keep your jars on the counter until cooling completely. They should be hard and ready to use after a few hours.
