Why Modern Homesteading?

Why Modern Homesteading?

It may seem a little weird to some that we would want to keep chickens and grow our own food. It’s more work than going to the grocery store. But to us, it’s an opportunity to experience a slower and simpler life.

Waking up with the sun, taking a few moments of silence in the mornings as we gather eggs from the chickens. Breathing in the fresh air around us.

Slowing down enough in the evenings to cook a meal completely from scratch and from the garden. Sitting down with our families and discussing our day as we share a meal.

Watching seeds germinate and sprout from the soil beneath them. Appreciating the weather. The sun and rain bringing life to everything around us. Knowing how our food was grown and raised. Understanding a life is necessary when bringing food to the table.

A quote from Jill Winger really sums up why we are doing this…

“Here’s to us. The ones disenchanted with the blandness of conformity. The ones who swim upstream while the societal herd rides the river of least resistance. The ones who favor homegrown & handmade over cheap & mass produced. The ones who embrace sweaty summer days & frigid winter nights instead of chasing constant comfort. The ones who grow, shepherd, nurture, product, knead & craft instead of consume. The ones who are old fashioned on purpose and choose to truly live, not just merely exist”

Jill Winger (The Prairie Homestead)

These are all things the grocery store cannot provide us. Modern homesteading is a choice we have made to bring an element of responsibility into our lives. We hope if this inspires you that you will follow along on our journey as we move towards this new lifestyle.
